FANUC America Integrator PaR Systems has introduced the new I-STIR Robotic System for friction stir welding of complex geometries. This system utilizes the heavy duty FANUC M-900iB robot to complete the automated friction stir welding application.
Before we watch PaR Systems’ I-STIR technology in action, here’s how friction stir welding works; A shouldered tool with a profiled pin is rotated and plunged into the interface of the materials to be joined, generating frictional heat. The heat causes the material to soften without reaching the melting point. The plasticized material is forged as the pin tool traverses thru the materials. Friction stir welding has successfully joined large structures like High Speed Trains, and Space Launch Vehicles. Friction stir welding is unlike traditional welding because the joining occurs below the melting point of the material. The process causes minimal component distortion while providing high strength welds. Friction stir welding has been demonstrated to have double the strength of riveted components.
Now we’ll take a look at how FANUC America Integrator PaR Systems is using their new I-STIR technology, along with FANUC robots, to provide manufacturers with a total-value friction stir welding solution. The baseline solution for the robotic welder utilizes the proven I-STIR spindle weld package and communication with the Robot Controller for articulation. The I-STIR weld package includes X and Y force measurement for process monitoring and path correction. This independent forge provides the high-accuracy, z-axis load control during the welding process that is essential for making quality welds at high travel speeds.
By introducing the I-STIR technology with the robust and proven FANUC M-900iB robot, complex curvature welding applications are now possible.
